GENERATION Y LOOKS FOR GREEN TO WORK AND TO BUY
Companies That Look “Green” Attract Young Talent and Consumers Willing to Spend More
College graduates have added “green” to the list of factors such as salary, location and benefits in their job search. They are looking for a company where they can not only contribute from day one, but where that company will also represent environmental values and educate employees on these issues.
According to Outlaw Consulting (a qualitative research firm focused on generation Y), this young demographic favored fifteen green brands: Apple, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Toyota, Honda, Google, Aveda, Zipcar, American Apparel, Ikea, 7th Generation, the Body Shop, Starbucks, Netflix and Method. Actually, these companies may not be the greenest. However, they have succeeded in creating an environmentally responsible message with green packaging, signage and marketing.
Many of the 84% of Generation Y actively concerned about the climate crisis stated that the green movement relates to their career choices and product purchases. Jenny Floren, founder and CEO of Experience states, “Companies should clearly communicate their environmental commitments and socially responsible practices throughout all recruiting programs to attract the best talent.”
Twenty percent of this population segment are looking for more green product options; this group is also looking for more education about becoming involved in the green movement. They want to support a cause with their purchasing power and personal involvement.
Offering green promotions internally to your associates and externally to your customers and target market is an effective method for marketing your environmental certifications, social involvement and green philosophy. FutureOxygenCards.com is a green Michigan company that provides biodegradable and plantable greeting cards and promotional buttons and jewelry. Our products offer a clean modern look that appeals to all demographics.
