All About Emerald

This emerald pendant was said to have been an 80th birthday gift for the Chinese Emperor Qianlong in 1791, and by late 2007 its value was estimated at about $3.7 million dollars. The necklace is a good fit for May babies, since emerald is their birthstone. A fine emerald can be more expensive than a diamond of the same carat weight, but not all emeralds are valuable, and you can assume that the emeralds you find in most jewelry have been treated in some way to make them more attractive. It sure doesn’t hurt to learn some emerald basics before you go shopping.

Dr. Anne Helmenstine is About.com’s Guide to Chemistry, and if I remember correctly she’s also a jewelry designer. I discovered a photo gallery on her site today, all about gemstones — how they’re formed, what’s in them, and how they’ve been used throughout history. It’s a real good read for anyone who’s interested in colored gems. If you like to go gemstone mining, don’t miss Anne’s photo tour of her trip to Hiddenite, North Carolina, where she found all sorts of gemstones, including the gem that town was named after.

All About Jewelry Clasps

Jewelry clasps keep pieces like necklaces, bracelets and anklets securely in place, and even though we usually think of clasps as functional components — or we don’t think about them at all — a designer’s ability to choose the best clasp for a piece of jewelry can either enhance or detract from its overall appearance. It’s not all about looks though. Ask yourself a few questions about clasps before you buy jewelry. Can you open the clasp easily? Is the jewelry secure when the clasp is closed? If the clasp is visible, is it attractive? I hope my clasp tutorial will help you make good clasp selections.
